It’s my great pleasure to announce that our first Writer Unboxed book will be published this November by Writer’s Digest! Called Author in Progress, the book will guide writers through the process of creating a novel — covering pre-writing considerations, and working through each of the most critical stages before reaching the end (and even beyond the end).
In true WU fashion, this book focuses on what you can do and not what you can’t. It isn’t only for writers interested in either traditional publishing or self-publishing, either, but rather is for all writers interested in producing the best book possible while evolving their own work habits, craft, and goals for themselves. Meaning: It’s for all of you.
What does the book offer that you can’t find here on the blog? Easy answer: This is a cohesive start-to-finish guide, detailing the journey an author in progress takes with his/her work in progress, including the many ways the writer can improve the work and the many ways the work can improve the writer.
I just want to take a second to share something with you about the Writer Unboxed team. When I reached out to ask who might like to be involved in this project, not just a few team members stepped up with a raised hand. Every single member of the team said ‘sign me up.’ That means Author in Progress will feature all of us, and in ways that might surprise you. It also means I’m one of the most fortunate Editors in Chief ever. Don’t think I don’t know it.
In the coming months, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase a few teaser essays–clips from the book that will give you a taste of what you’ll find in Author in Progress. But in case you don’t need those teasers to know you’ll want a copy of this book, you can reserve one now on Amazon and add it to your want-to-read list on Goodreads.
We hope you’re as excited about this book as we are. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
Write on!

Great news, Therese. Can’t wait to get a copy!
Wow! Congrats to the whole team. So looking forward to this!
So will the book be out in time to get it signed by everyone at the UnCon? In any case, this is thrilling. I can’t wait for the teasers and for the book itself. What great news!
Natalie, yes! In fact, the UnCon will draw topics from the book. Very excited about it.
Very exciting news! Congrats all around!
Great news! Can’t wait,
Awesome news! Congratulations to everyone who’s worked on this!
YAY! I can’t wait to read it!
Exciting! I can’t wait to get my copy.
Fabulous!
Hooray. Sounds like a fantastic book. On my GR list!
Yay – I’m thrilled to be part of this project!
And okay, I’ll grudgingly admit: it’s possible that this is a *slightly* better idea than the whole “WU Swimsuit Calendar” idea I pitched, which for some reason the WU Powers That Be chose not to pursue. Now the question is: what the heck should I do with this leopard Speedo?
Sounds like cover art to me. :-)
“We hope you’re as excited about this book as we are.”—Absolutely, positively, swinging from a chandelier without a net.
Three Cheers to All!!! Thank you.
Whoop! I’ve pre-ordered.
This is so exciting! The little blog that could isn’t so little. (Well, has it ever been in imagination and hard work? Nope!) Go WU!!!!
Excellent news!
Crazy Kool, and more than a wee bit fantastic! Just what the word book doctor ordered. You guys never cease to excite and amaze. Bravo :-D

Well, shucks, of course we stepped up. Improving the writer rather than simply improving the book? That’s what sets WU apart from a lot of writing sites.
Exciting!
I can’t say what a delight it is to contribute to your steadfast vision of helping writers grow . . . and grow . . . and grow . . . Huzzah to you, Therese!
This is amazing news!! I just added Author In Progress to my GR list, and you bet I’ll get a copy once it’s out. Congratulations, Writer Unboxed! :D
Very cool, a big step up for this amazing and helpful site. We’ll still be allowed to stop by here on a daily basis, right? Right. I thought so. Congrats, Therese!
Yay! Such wonderful news, and I’m so delighted to be a part of it. I can’t wait to hold the full book in my hands!
Such exciting news! Congratulations! Right after I post this comment I’m pre-ordering my copy. Can’t wait to read it!
Congratulations Therese! I can’t wait for my copy. Unbox has been such a great resource for me over the years. Great job to the whole team!

This book is going to be on the “reach while writing” shelf of my desk.
Are there no end to your talents, Therese? WU founder, editor-in-chief, novelist, book-deal-arranger, UnCon organizer?
Many thanks for including me on the joyous journey.
Does this mean you will lose the title of Unpublished Writer, Jan? Congratulations on your publishing credit!
Congratulations also to Therese and all the contributors. I’m sure it is destined to become a classic.
Heh. Good question, Deborah. We haven’t discussed it yet. ;)
I do believe you will be published, Jan! (W00t!)
Sweet!
Well-deserved! Congrats, Therese! I’m heading to Amazon now. :)
Wonderful news!
I wanna see one too! Or two too! I have a one-word essay in the book that took 9 days to write, because I had to consider its ancestry, shape, sound, aerobic condition, potential allergic reactions to other essays and roughage content. I think I got it right.
Thanks (and congrats) Therese, for being the soulful lit shepherd you are!
What a fantastic idea! This has become my go-to place for writerly information, inspiration and advice. Write On, Unboxed! I’ll definitely buy a copy to add to my writer bible collection.
This is great news! I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy and thank you for putting this out in the world.
Awesome! I can’t wait to get my copy!
Hello
Good news, but is there going to be an E-Book?
Roo
Roo, yes, there will be. It’s so early that I don’t think all formats are appearing. Stay tuned!
Thanks for your enthusiastic support, everyone! Exciting times, for sure.
Awesome! Can’t wait to hold, and read, a copy!
This is so incredibly awesome! I was around when Writer Unboxed was in its infancy, and I’m so, so thrilled at its tremendous growth and contribution to writers. You have created a truly wonderful, welcoming place for writers of all stripes. Congratulations! I can’t wait to read this!
I’ve learned so many things here at WU, and I hope those good lessons will be repeated in the new book.
Right now I’m getting all kinds of mileage out of something someone (? so sorry) posted a while back — the mirror moment. Hope to see it in the book!
I can just imagine how much hard work has gone into this project. Congrats to all!
Yay! I’m excited to be involved with such a fantastic group. Can’t wait to see the finished product and read everyone else’s contributions!
This is wonderful! I’ve just pre-ordered a copy, and now November seems so far away!
Super exciting news. Congratulations, team!
An honor and a privilege to take part, Therese. I’m proud to be part of this invaluable project.
Congrats. A great way to share some great posts and ideas.
This is so exciting! Thank you, Therese, for all of your hard work on this. Yay, WU!!!
Congratulations! This is exciting news. I’ve been a fan of WU for awhile and am looking forward to this first publication – I know it will be stellar!
