Kath here. It’s been a minute, hasn’t it, WU community? When Therese and I started Writer Unboxed, we never dreamed that our little blog about the craft of writing fiction would grow to the vibrant online haven for writers that it is today. We thank YOU for making that happen, and for being a part of what makes Writer Unboxed so special.
I don’t often get the time to spend with you as much as I would like. Along with the growth of Writer Unboxed, my professional career is also shifting into overdrive. And then there is my third life, which is writing novels for book packagers. Somewhere in there I make time for my family. But Writer Unboxed is still close to my heart; I cheer your successes, and commiserate with your challenges. I’m still here, though not as active as I might wish to be, but I’m behind the scenes, and with a watchful, prideful eye over posts and discussions and projects.
One of those projects has been the successful inauguration of our monthly e-newsletter this past spring. We started it as a way to amplify posts from WU’s website and Facebook page . In the newsletter, we offer exclusive content that includes pithier information useful to your writing goals, and inspirations that help refill the creativity well.
I’ve loved launching the e-newsletter and working closely with contributors and WU community members, but my bigger role at work has begun to impact my time – and some of the many balls I’d been juggling have been dropping. I know many of you who multi-task life to the hilt as I do can empathize.
But with change comes opportunity.
We thought long and hard about who would be the perfect mama for the newsletter, but we didn’t have to look far. We tapped WU contributor extraordinaire Jan O’Hara to take over the reins and we know she is going to do an exceptional job. WU readers know that Jan’s Q & A’s with cutting-edge authors and publishing professionals are masterful and informative, and her posts are chock-full of humor and insights into the writing process. We are confident she will take the newsletter to the next level with her creativity. (Contest details are below the cut!)
Assisting Jan is Liz Michalski, who has happily agreed to become the backbone of the Q & A section of the newsletter. Liz already familiar to long-time WU readers as a guest contributor, writing memorable, out-of-the-box posts on selling fiction at a farmer’s market and unique promotional ideas using Mini Moo cards. Her first novel, Evenfall , was published by Berkley Books (Penguin). Liz has been a reporter, an editor, and a freelance writer. We look forward to her contributions.
WU community member Amy Sue Nathan will also join the newsletter team as a Reader Unboxed book reviewer. Amy Sue, along with Colleen Turner, Keetha DePriest, Suzanne Anderson, and Dee DeTarsio will review the best of published unboxed fiction.
And of course we have contributors extraordinaire Don Maass, Chuck Sambuchino, Victoria Mixon, Erika Liodice, and Vaughn Roycroft bringing you inspirations, insights and the latest industry information.
Stay tuned as there will be more to come at a later date on the other talented folks who will round out this team.
Because we are so excited about the new direction the newsletter will be taking under Jan’s and Liz’s capable hands, we want to re-christen it with a splash. And what better way to do it than have a contest! We want a new name for the Writer Unboxed newsletter 2.0, and we know that the creative minds of our community members will come up with the perfect moniker.
- Post your entries in the comment section below. Entries will be accepted until 7 a.m. EST Sunday, October 7, 2012. The top entries will be determined by a combo of the number of Likes an entry receives, and our own discretion. The top three entries (maybe four – you know we have a hard time just picking three!) will go up for a final vote via a poll.
- The winner will be highlighted in the November newsletter, see their winning entry at the top of the newsletter itself month after month, and receive the all-important bragging rights. They will also receive a highly-coveted Writer Unboxed tee-shirt, as modeled by WU community member Vaughn Roycroft (left).
Look for the newly launched newsletter in your inbox soon. And if you haven’t signed up for it, take a moment to do so now [HERE ]. We feel confident you will love Writer Unboxed’s newsletter, which will be loaded with writerly nuggets and inspirations to help you take your project to new heights.
