To those who haven’t heard: to my utter astonishment, I won two awards at the 2010 SCBWI Illustrator Portfolio Showcase. I entered the Showcase at the last minute and only because an illustrator friend urged me; I usually focus on the tracks for writers. I’ve posted photos of my portfolio on Facebook, if you’re curious.
Lesson I learned from this past week: Don’t let yourself get into a career rut. Be open to new opportunities.
p.s. Why yes, the book in the cartoon -is- THE LAST WILL OF MOIRA LEAHY by Therese Walsh. :-)

Ah, it’s so true. There is a bit of sadness at the end of every good book.
This is cute. :)
I understand her completely. There’s nothing like when you crack open that long awaited book for the first time. Rereading it is not as good.
YOU are fabulous. Not that I didn’t already know that, but still. You are fabulous. Thank you! And HUGE congrats to you for your much-deserved win. :-)
Yes, always good to try something new. congrats on your awards… Wonderful! And… the cartoon is so true. I have two books on my bookshelf waiting for me to decide it’s time to read them.
I agree about reaching the end of a good book! And yes, I definitely felt that way when I read The Last Will of Moira Leahy. Loved that book.
Insightful and clever post. I love comics. Hey, Therese!
How cool that you used Therese’s book. I felt the same way.
Ad congratulations on your two awards!
Congrats, Debbie!
Love the simplicity of your comics plus the messages.

Big congrats! You deserve it!
So funny the comic reminded me of a 70’s Danish collection of 29 books I loved. I remember me crying when reading the last one. And then, all of a sudden realizing I could take all the journey from book 1.
Funny cartoon. I remember feeling similarly after giving birth to my first child: “I’ll never, ever give birth for the first time!” Hm. I’m not sure what that says about me.
Congrats on the awards!
I so GET this comic! I’ve been known to look at a cover for a long time before I actually crack the cover!
And I LOVE the book she is “putting off” reading.
hilarious, my feelings exactly when I start reading a book.
Thanks for the laugh!
Oh, so true! LOL
Congrats on your awards!!!
A) Congratulations!!
B) HAHAHA.
C) Whoa, haha, did not notice the book cover, but that’s awesome. (My guess would have been the forthcoming Hunger Games Book #3… But I guess I was just projecting. :P) (Plus I have already read LWML!)
I am amazed by your many styles too! Congratulations and so well-deserved :) I also love that portfolio. Lovely.
lol, i had both blogs open while checking out the portfolio, and picked the wrong tab to comment, but you know what i mean! :)
Fabulous, and so true! Congrats on your awards. :-)
I have books left over from the RNA Conference, and I really want to read them, but I don’t want to HAVE read them. So saving them for my holiday in Sept…..
I have a book right now that is the last of the series for Fablehaven, and I keep skipping a day or two and then read a chapter and then skip a day or two.
I want it to last. :)
EEEE, so happy for you, Debbie! *twirls with glee*
Thanks so much, everyone! :-)
The sad part is, the comic is too true to be funny! Though, I can laugh at myself.
Oh I love this comic! :) And congratulations on the awards. If all your comics are this great and hilarious then it doesn’t surprise me in the least. Wonderful job.
Congratulations, on the awards! I went to your facebook and checked out what you’ve done. Awesome work!
I can relate to the cute cartoon above, how many times have I not wanted a book to end.
Coming late to this, but I still wished to congratulate you on your well-deserved award. :D
