Good News, Other Tidbits, and What About YOU?

There’s a lot going on. C’mere.
Two of our fab contributors have new releases coming:
Ann Aguirre‘s Skin Tight (written as Ava Gray) releases this Tuesday, 6/1. Visit Ann’s blog to learn about some of her promotions/contests.
Allison Winn Scotch‘s third novel, The One That I Want, releases this Tuesday as well. Don’t forget that Allison and her agent, Elisabeth Weed, have teamed up to offer writers/readers an opportunity. If you purchase Allison’s new novel anytime between now and June 5th, Elisabeth will read your query and first chapter. (Elisabeth is also my agent, so I can vouch for her fabulousness!) Details HERE.
Big congrats to WU contributor and award-winning author Juliet Marillier for winning a major French fantasy award, Le Prix Imaginales, for her first novel, Daughter of the Forest, in the category ‘best novel in translation.’ The French edition was published in 2009 by L’Atalante, and translated by Helene Bury.
I’m thrilled to announce that Brunonia Barry, New York Times Bestselling author of The Lace Reader and The Map of True Places will be joining WU in the near future, to become our voice of literary fiction.
I’ve stumbled across a few stellar links in recent weeks that I want to share with you. First up, this piece called The No. 1 Habit of Highly Creative People, with a hat tip for my Twitter friend Tyler Weaver, who is not only a nice guy but has two adorable dogs (see Poodle Headlock of Love; and seriously if you’re not on Twitter yet, you must remedy — and then follow me, of course – @theresewalsh). WU contributor and editorial director of Writer’s Digest Jane Friedman posted on The 3 Best Takeaways for Writers from Book Expo America and Build Your Email List Now. Having a hard time facing your draft? Lydia Sharp, one of WU’s finalists for our unpubbed position, wrote an essay recently called Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. Juliet Marillier pointed me toward this interesting article (and new craft book), The Virgin’s Promise – A New Archetypal Structure–an alternative to The Hero’s Journey. Christina Katz posted a touching compilation of authors’ proudest writer moments on her website. If your wip has a strong opening and you’d like to put it to the test, maybe you’d be interested in learning more about The Strongest Start Novel Competition 2010 (deadline: 6/8). And this article by A.S. King entitled Chickens & Writing — A Love Story? Pure gold. Pure.
More book release news: WU interviewee and all around terrific human being Lynne Griffin‘s novel Life Without Summer released in paperback this past week, and her new novel isn’t far behind; Sea Escape will release this July. Hyatt Bass‘s acclaimed novel, The Embers, released this past week in paperback, as did Jenna Blum‘s new novel, The Stormchasers.
If anyone is dying to hear my actual voice, I have been immortalized (er, really?) in my first ever podcast along with fellow authors Randy Susan Meyers and Shelley Stout. The topic: What to Do Before You Debut. A public thanks to Jenny Milchman for inviting me to attend the Watchung Booksellers’ Writing Matters panel.
Clear your calendars; JUNE promises to be an exciting month here with all of our contributors offering their spin on BEST ADVICE. Stay tuned.
Finally, I’d love to hear your good news. What’s happening with your work-in-progress? Read any good articles or novels lately, or hear about an exciting new release? It’s share time, and the floor is yours.
Write on!

Just found your blog through facebook, and I find it very interesting and helpful.
This last week I wrote just over a hundred pages in the story I’m working on, bringing it to about 210 pages and a little over 40,000 words. I’d say that’s progress. =)

What an incredible list of events and links. I’ve already added most–all?–of the novels you mentioned to my to-read stack. (How come I add three books to that stack for every one book I read?) Now all I need is about twelve more hours in the day to fit everything in . . .
I’ve read so many good writing articles and blog posts lately that it seems impossible to do an adequate job by naming just a few. My advice would be, like Therese says, to join Twitter if you’re not on it already, follow a few key people–like those on the masthead above–and start soaking in the knowledge.
My news? I did my first-ever internet-TV show this week, and wow do I appreciate Lydia’s essay. It was all about “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.” I’m glad I did it. I’m also sharpening my ax as I count the days until I can pick up my WIP again at the end of July and begin revisions; I wish I could do it sooner. Finally, I’ve got a post on a certain blog coming up that I’m really, really excited about . . . well, come back tomorrow for more details on that. :)

Wow, thanks for all the great info! It’s gonna take me all weekend to get through it — but it’s worthwhile!

Therese, you were a great (so natural) speaker! Thanks so much for being a part of Writing Matters. No good news to share on my end yet–I have a novel that just went on sub–but I did read a very interesting article on the Huffington Post about crime fiction being as serious-minded as literary fiction, a mirror of society’s ills. Check it out! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dennis-palumbo/through-a-glass-darkly-cr_b_494065.html

Congrats to Juliet, and I LOVED that podcast. :) Like Donna said, it’ll take some time to get through all this good stuff, but it’s well worth it. Thanks!
I also appreciate the link! I did a double-take when I saw my name there… hey, that article looks familiar– oh, it’s me! haha.
I wish I had a new sale to report, but none of my short fiction has been accepted yet this year. The best I can offer right now is that the first draft of my newest novel (my first attempt at YA Romance) is nearly complete. I’ve been working on it for the past 5 weeks and don’t see any reason why it won’t be finished in another week. This will be my third completed novel-length manuscript, each of them a different genre (sci-fi, women’s fiction, young adult). Very exciting. :)

Welcome to WU, Tyffani, and congrats on your progress! One hundred pages in a week is fantastic.
Tracy, I have the same situation; I just purchased four new books this week and maybe I’ll have time to read one this month. Very cool about your TV appearance and of course that *other* one. :-)
Jenny, thank you for the kind words and the link. And best of luck with your novel-on-submission!
Lydia, w00t on being so close to the end of your draft. I find it fascinating that you write in so many genres — maybe the topic for a post sometime? And congrats on hosting the session for YABWA!

No good news yet, but of course it could be any day and I’m always hoping (and working) towards it.
In the meantime, congrats to all the WU peep with good news, and welcome to Brunonia!
