These are my favorite analogies ever. Made me laugh out loud and yet a perfect explanation of concept. Much praise to you :)

Great post, Ray. I'm not sure any of us ever develops such a thick skin that we can view our creative work as separate from our self - nor should we, in my opinion. We do need to train ourselves to get quickly over the initial pain / grief / outrage response to critique / editing and accept the value of an expert, detached opinion!

I found this blog through Horserider's Blog and plan to add it to my blogroll. Ray, you mentioned that you're an editor. If a writer was interested in utilizing your services, how would he/she contact you?

yeah, it seems I write a lot of squashes in today's pumpkin-oriented economy, to take an irresistable analogy further, lol.

Seriously, though, this is a good reminder. Publishing professionals don't care about your feelings, they care about the work in front of them. The beatings I take don't even phase me anymore, because I know it's not about me, it's about the work.

Great post, Ray. Good luck at the conferences, you'll knock 'em dead.

sometimes you just have to plow that rotty pumpkin back into the field and resow. it's funny you should bring up pumpkins, though. I've got a pumpkin vine growing in a bed of shrubs by my formal front door. Not even sure how the original seed got there but I've decided to let it meander as it pleases. Lots of blossoms, but no baby pumpkins yet. but i've tried to grow pumpkins in the past, getting the field ready, planting the variety i wanted. even slipping wax paper underneath them so they wouldn't get ugly on the bottom. then waited. watered. waited. and got nada. i told the lawn guy not to mow or wack this little surprise. he just shakes his head and nods. apt metaphor today, ray! t

It takes awhile to grow the tough leather skin, and sometimes those barbs do prick through the soft parts, but you still have to take the gestation of the novel into mind. Sometimes the gestation tests the writer so much that they want you to be excited about their 'ugly' baby, regardless.

Great post! I also worked in advertising for years and hadn't made the connection that my moderately think skin comes from that experience.

Haha, kind of goofy analogies on the surface, but if you really think about it, they're spot-on! Thanks.
