As always this is a wonderful post. I had to laugh at, "Malcolm Gladwell’s Outlier puts forth the idea that anyone who succeeds has put in ten thousand hours of work before they actually make a breakthrough (as in selling a novel)." You know, I might just have put in my 10k before the sale.

Thanks, Barbara!

I read many genres but cross-genres have to be my favorite. I go for story everytime. Doesn't matter if the author's name is familiar to me or not, or whether I expect to find them in a specific section of the library/bookstore or not. Story rules.

Glad it was well timed for some of you!

CS, it definitely is agonizing to have to go through another painstaking rewrite, but it's always worth it in the end. Good for you for respecting your process enough not to rush it.

You seem pretty persistent to me, Kathleen!

Great post, Barbara, and it's coming at the right time for me as well. For me it's the three P's: persistence, persistence, persistence! I've got the other two down pretty well by now.

C.S. I hear ya. Revisions are a killer, but they are the mark of a professional. Sometimes they seem like they take forever though.

Patience is the one I work at most. Especially when I talk to other writers who's work I've seen and find out they're querying and receiving requests for partials and fulls. And it's hard, knowing they're still rewriting their books and seeking feedback to improve those MSS. I know you shouldn't compare but I think I'm too hard on myself--or too much of a perfectionist--or just a worry-wart. Being patient with myself when I'm wishing to find a burst of energy to just get the whole project done. Being patient over revisions is so hard yet I've never gone through a revision without admitting that the changes improved the writing. Does anyone else agonize over this?

Great post! I think I’ve definitely improved my level of practice this past year or so, making a point to write a set amount each morning, no matter the style or genre. Just to get those juices flowing. It’s paid off. The “playing” aspect of just getting something down on paper before the day’s work begins often leads to working projects. Not a bad side effect!

Thanks, Maya. Glad you enjoyed it.

Eric, you nailed it--forming the habit of practice time is key. Then it becomes like any other habit, brushing your teeth or an after dinner walk--you do it because that's how your day flows.

Practice usually gives me the most trouble, merely because of the lack of time. Or maybe it's that I haven't formed the habit of writing all the time yet? Either way, I have plenty of persistence (I haven't given up yet) and I'm still plenty passionate about the work. Now if I can just nail the practice, I'll be good.
