Thanks Jules and Juliet, for the replies - I can't wait to read the rest of the interview.

Jules, I hope you didn't mind my comment - I just knew if I'd been in your shoes I wouldn't have been able to keep focus... I would forever have been asking questions. It was fascinating to read your response, and to know you had indeed read Juliet's work and found it inspiring.

Congratulations on your success, I'm going to hunt down your novels here in Australia and I am sure I'll love them!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Vic, you are right: Juliet has been a great inspiration to me, though I only found out about her work after I had begun my Celtic novels and had, unfortunately, left Perth - where she was living! Juliet's Sevenwaters books came out after I moved to the UK in 1999 to continue writing my trilogy, so for a few years I had no chance to chase her up on home ground. Of course, her gorgeous writing and total inhabitation of the Celtic "ethos" was utterly inspiring and really gave me a boost. I was therefore very excited when I eventually had the chance to appear with Juliet at a writers' festival in Perth a few years ago, doing joint talks about mythology and all things Celtic. Over a cup of tea in her back garden, I had the pleasure of asking all about how she works, and sharing the things that inspire us both. She is a very generous and lovely lady. I told her of my idea to write this book on Deirdre then - though it has taken me a long while to get there. She is wonderfully prolific and disciplined, and I am not!

Vic, this is the third author interview I've done for Writer Unboxed (the other two were with Jacqueline Carey and Joe Abercrombie.) Writing experience is not a factor in my choice of whom to interview. I approach writers whose work particularly interests me. I also think about what may be of interest to the Writer Unboxed community.

In the third part of the interview, coming up in a couple of weeks, you'll find Jules's answer to the question about whether my work influenced her.

Wow, it was weird seeing such an expert in the field interviewing a new writer to the Celtic historical/fantasy genre. I have to admit, I kept expecting Jules to say, 'But enough about me, let's talk about your writing...'

Maybe there was fan talk there but it was edited out?

I'd love to know, both being from WA, if Jules was in fact inspired by Juliet Marillier's work?

When I saw that WU was going to interview Jules, I checked out her website, loved what I saw, and am now plowing through her books. They are absolutely fantastic! So thank you, WU, for hooking me on another great author; Juliet, for conducting this fantastic interview; and Jules, for writing a story that keeps me up to the wee hours, unable to put your book down. Such is the magic of the storyteller!

I shall look out for Jules's books. We need more good historical fantasy writers!

I enjoyed reading Jules' background and how it has helped her craft. I look forward to part 2 of the interview that deals more with technique.
