Just wanted to add something else. This is something Christina said in our interview:

Your platform includes your Web presence, any public speaking you do, the classes you teach, the media contacts you’ve established, the articles you’ve published, and any other means you currently have for making your name and your future books known to a viable readership.

I thought this might be worth emphasizing. Platform isn't just a website or a blog. Platform is who you know. It's who you touch--and who can potentially touch you back. It defines your range. This can be important because those contacts you have can help you in mysterious ways. When I landed my agent, Elisabeth, it was through an e-handshake aided by WU contributor Allison Winn Scotch. The deal came shortly after that.

Platform isn't going to help your book, but it can help YOU by increasing your visibility, which can then in turn help you land a book deal. And that's what we want you to do! :-)

Kristan, maybe they didn't, and it's certainly true that you can get published and rise to the top without a platform. It's been done! But for aspiring novelists, I don't think building a platform can hurt--and it might help a lot. :-)

Thanks, Therese. And thanks, Kathleen.

Kristan, things were so different in the industry way back when Toni Morroison was not yet known...that I think it would have been a completely different ball game. But it sure would be interesting to hear what they'd all have to say!

I wonder... Did/do writers like Toni Morrison, Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot Diaz, etc. think about this stuff?
