I can vouch for Dave's advice and add a little on top of it. Borrowing a couple lines from Pursuit of Happyness; "Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something."

"You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it."

My parents thought the idea of getting a job making video games was ridiculous. I think they laughed the first time I voiced this desire, probably around age 12.

I laughed back, and had the last laugh, when I entered the game industry at age 22.

Fabulous post, Dave! I have to confess I waited years and years to make the risky leap of faith. Having dependents means the risk is not one's own alone, hence the caution. But I did eventually ditch the well-paid, secure day job and I agree, there is nothing to compare with spending your day doing the work you love most.

Being a millionaire was never part of my plan, just earning enough so I wasn't constantly stressed about paying the bills.

I've come to realize that the Universe throws good stuff at me all the time, but I had been too preoccupied with my unhappiness to catch the good stuff. The joy of doing what I love opened my mind to receive.

Great post!

How could I say no to Dave when he writes awesome posts like this?

Ya know, this morning as I was pecking my way through an excruciating first draft, I remembered what Dave wrote, that we are really lucky to be doing something we love and to embrace it. That simple attitude change made the frustration go away.

I wasn't too keen on seeing Cloverfield (hate horror movies, too much suffering) until I read a few reviews. It really does seem like an unboxed movie, a rarity these days. I might check it out after all!

All I’m saying is: do what you have to do, but don’t get so used to it that you continue doing it forever. Don’t become inured. Stay awake.

Ooh, "Stay awake." Love this fresh advice. Thanks for the inspirational post, Dave. Along with my cuppa tea, it's the perfect way to start the day.
