Thanks for the inspiration to keep rewriting and to stay on the trail. I love the term Neanderwannabees, but I don't want to be one.

Ray,
Great post. Thanks for making it clear to those of us who are struggling to evolve.

Oh, Juliet, that's too funny! Earlier I'd thought of it as a magical theory (that the manuscript fairy would come in the night) but it might be a creationist view instead.

As for where I'm at, I'm published but I hope I'm still evolving. Sometimes my work regresses back to primordial ooze but that's a process that's more cyclic than evolutionary!

Great theory. It makes complete sense to me.

Of course, there's also the creationist theory of writing: a god-given writing talent will result in fame and fortune even if the writer doesn't do any of the hard slog. We've all met people who believe this.

of course, if you are into chaos theory, much splat lands in places where it grows into something great...or falls on barren soil. but your theory does make me want to stand upright for some reason...

Love this post.

"Writers who evolve past this point frequently have inch-thick hides covering their brains..."

I wonder if this is why I have such an awful memory?

Darwin only knows if I'm evolved "enough" for the publishing industry, but I'd like to think I'm close.

I think I fall somewhere between an amoeba and an invertebrate with stumps for arms. I have a primitive sense of myself as a storyteller (still evolving, mind you!) but not yet a full-formed author-species.

Great post as always, Ray!
