I've started reading Novelist's Essential Guide to Crafting Scenes by Raymond Obstfeld, and it's a big help. I've read enough books on writing by now, but bought a couple more specifically centered around scenes because I'm at a point where I don't need to hear any more 'high level' rules, and need a bit more reference for the nitty gritty stuff.

Also picked up,The Scene Book: A Primer for the Fiction Writer. Not sure if those'd be any help or not.

I had to completely throw out my first scene. I loved it for so long that I couldn't see how it was just a bunch of backstory that didn't move the story along at all. Now it reads so much better without it.

One thing I'm not worried about with your new wip, Therese, is that you're going to blow the opening. Not. Gunna. Happen.

I like an opening that seamlessly pulls the reader into the character's problem from the get-go. I don't have to be clobbered over the head, but I like to know that the storyteller has a way with words and I'm going to be able to turn the editor in my head off.
