Sometimes there's a set of characters that grips folks and they just want to imagine their own stories about them. The Darcy/Lizzy Bennett fan fic (and published sequels!) are huge.

The fan fic I wrote was an experiement, admittedly. But by using two established characters, I was able to concentrate on the story. I also had fun putting words into the mouths that I thought the characters "should" have said.

But I think it would be weird to be a writer and have someone else write stories based on my own creations. That would be freaky indeed, Juliet!

I've found that most fanfic authors work on original projects at the same time they write fanfiction. Some people write fanfiction because they have particular scenarios that they've imagined other people's characters in (one of the reasons I've written fanfiction). Or sometimes they just write it for something to do, like to get rid of a writer's block.(although the instant gratification is an added bonus).

... yeah. That's my two cents on the subject :).

I've never really understood why writers of fanfic wouldn't rather create their own characters and settings than use someone else's. I get the point about immediate feedback (that is also available in online writing forums that don't include fanfic, of course.) But the feedback of an unknown person on the Internet is no more or less useful than the feedback of the writer's mother or partner, really - the online critic could be anyone. So is this about instant gratification, or is it about actually learning to write better?
