I use the outline as a sort of map. I follow it but I'm also willing to divert if my characters want to go somewhere else. Kath and I have both had difficulty with it lately, and I just lost one of my own comments! Maybe we've eaten up too much of our bandwidth? Anyway, I guess my solution is pretty obvious when you step back from the problem a bit, but it was truly a lightbulb moment for me when I realized I had a little more freedom than I'd accounted for. Thankfully! And you know I have a truly sophisticated sense of humor; I could go on all day with the puns and metaphors! :D My poor kids are cursed. I consider myself a Humming Owl. I like to fly free in a territory marked by the bounds of an outline, but I don't like to be restricted in a cage. That seems to work best for me.
