Kids today do seem to more readily embrace dark tales than did children from my generation - or perhaps it's just that editors are less nervous about producing a wide variety of flavors in children's lit. My daughter is heavy into fantasy tales, regardless of the light-to-dark ratio. (She's currently reading Fablehaven, about a fairy and elf preserve.)

Regardless of personal preferences, I think it's a great time to be reading children's stories; there's such a fantastic selection to choose from.

Good post, Vicky. Thanks!

Great post, Vicky!

Just speaking as a parent here, not as a writer, but I find that my kid likes going to A Magical Place in her stories--updated fairy tales, as it were--and those types of stories are more naturally going to have high stakes. Life or death, worlds collapsing stakes. I dunno if she's drawn to those stories because they offer her some sort of catharsis, or because there are more of those types of stories in the marketplace right now. But that's what she wants. Maybe in about 5 years she'll want to read Gossip Girls where the stakes are losing a boyfriend (god help me). Right now I'm happy to have her worried about feral cats. :)
